The territory
The villa is located in the Sicilian province of Messina, one of the richest area of the island. Among the most famous touristic attractions here, there are: Taormina, the Eolie island (Alicudi, Filicudi, Lipari, Panarea, Salina, Stromboli and Vulcano), but also Milazzo – recently added to the rankings of "most beautiful Italian villages" -, Tindari with its sanctuary of "black mother Mary", and Marinello where you can find a natural reserve.
Eolie islands: how to reach them
The islands can be reached from Milazzo. The villa is near the A20 motorway that connects Messina to Palermo, and Milazzo is only 20 minutes away by car from there. Once you're in Milazzo you can choose how to reach the Eolie islands, you can rent a private boat with a skipper that will allow you to visit more islands in a single day, this allows you choose the itinerary "on board", the alternative to this is to buy a ticket for the most common tourist vessel: the hydrofoil.
Eolie islands: what to do and what to see
You've reached one of the 7 islands, what now? Since the islands have a volcanic origin (Vulcano and Stromboli are still active!), one of the main attraction are hot springs and mud baths: these are a 100% natural health spa. If you prefer trekking we suggest you to join one of the many visits to the crater of Stromboli or Vulcano, where you'll enjoy the most beautiful view of the whole archipelago, don't forget your camera!
If you are the earth-loving type and want to stay in an uncontaminated environment, Alicudi is the place for you. Since on the island there are no ATM points and no pharmacy, make sure you land on the island with money and whatever you need. Even without those commodities Alicudi is still great and maybe that's her beauty, here you can live the nature and the sea on an island that stopped following the flow of time.
The island of Filicudi offers you crystalline waters, a coast full of little bays and life. Here you can enjoy the most beautiful scuba diving experience: Grotta dei Gamberi (32meters deep) houses the wreck of an ancient Roman boat (dated II centuy b.C.).
A visit to Panarea “the VIP's island”, is another unforgettable experience. Here you can relax on its sandy beaches, Capo Junco, Cala degli Zimmari and Calcara beach are the most famous locations. Panarea is important even on the cultural side, as you can find the ruins of the prehistoric village of Capo Milazzese (XIV century b.C.).
Last but not least, Lipari. The biggest island of the “7 Eolian wonders”. Lipari offers you every kind of attractions: from the beautiful Marina Corta with its realistic nativity scenes, to the fortified city with its castle. The citadel is also an open air museum full of churches and cloisters, you'll love to get lost inside its alleys.
Milazzo: what to do and what to see
Milazzo is filled with history and culture, it was first founded by the Greeks in the VII century b.C. Here you can walk on the Lungomare Garibaldi tasting the “granita” a typical Sicilian sweet breakfast, while also appreciating the baroque architecture of the city center.
On top of the city center you can find the Castle of Frederick II, the building that allowed Milazzo to enter the rankings of the “most beautiful Italian villages”, from here you can enjoy the most amazing view: the sea in front of you and the majestic mount Etna behind.
Other great place to visit here in Milazzo are : Polifemo's cave, the Dome (one of the few baroque building of the XVI century in Sicily), the ruins of “Palazzo dei Giurati”, the church of Madonna del Rosario and the church of S.Francesco di Paola.
Tindari e Marinello
Gently placed on a promontory overlooking the sea, the Sanctuary of Tindari rises up. It is famous for the wooden statue of the “Madonna Nera” (black mother Mary). The legend says that the statue came ashore from a shipwrecked boat sailing from Asia and it quickly became a spiritual point of reference for many Sicilians.
In Tindari there is also a Roman-Greek theater inside the archaeological area, from which you can enjoy the view of the Eolie islands, but also the salty lakes of Marinello, that are part of a natural reserve.
In this area you can also find the Cantine Gaglio, a famous wine-producing site that is the reference point for the Mamertino Doc. The winery manages to blend the bucolic beauty of the vineyard on the sea with a modern cellar where excellent wines are made. The owner will accompany you inside the vineyard, explaining you the history of the place and allowing you to taste the production, while allowing you to taste wine and other local products.
What to eat
One of the reasons why Sicily attracts so many tourists is food. In Sicily you can eat like a king without spending like one. Street food in Messina? Granita, focaccia, pitoni and arancini.
Even though you can eat granita (a typical Sicilian ice-cold dessert) everywhere in Sicily, the granita of Messina is considered the best on the island, it's best in its coffee flavor, but you might want to try strawberry, lemon, and fruits.
Focaccia and Pitoni? Have you ever heard of them? These are two specialties of the Sicilian gastronomy. The first one is very similar to pizza, while the second one is a fried “calzone”; both of them are made with scarola (a kind of salad), chopped tomatoes, anchovies and cheese.
For what concerns typical products, the Messina province offers you the delicious salame Sant'Angelo and the Nebrodi black pork. Don't forget to ask for a glass of Faro wine after your meals and, of course, don't forget to order the dessert! Messina is all about desserts, we suggest you to try the Pignolata, Cannoli, Bianco e Nero (similar to profiteroles) and Pasticcini with cream.
During the afternoon you might want to try a real gelato, you won't regret it.
Recommended among the tours, is a visit to the city of Messina itself. You will be amazed by the beauty of the “city of the strait”. Messina is in fact only 3 kilometers away from the Italian peninsula and, although you might have the impression that you can swim to the other side of the strait, the strong streams that run in the strait makes it almost impossible.
That generated, during the centuries, many legends about the two monsters Scilla e Cariddi that made boat shipwreck in this part of the sea. Maybe we'll tell you the story, while looking at the sunset near Torre Faro, where you can enjoy the most beautiful view, while also relaxing or having a swim in the sea.
Here we are in the land of Faro Doc, a wine that you can taste at the winery “Tenuta Rasocolmo” while walking through the vineyards overlooking the sea. Not far from Torre Faro you can find the lakes of Ganzirri, two small salty lakes, famous for being a farm for sea food. We suggest you to stop here for lunch, to taste the amazing fresh fish.
There are a lot of restaurants that you won't forget easily. After lunch, you should go to the center of Messina, the city was rebuilt almost completely after the 1908 earthquake. Here you can visit the Dome that houses the biggest astronomical clock in Europe (still working!), the Church of Catalani, built before the earthquake, and the Sacrarium of Cristo Re (King Christ) that dominates the city, giving an incredible view on the strait.
All of this and much more awaits you in Sicily, in a villa you can only dream about, with your family or your friends. The villa is the perfect place to relax and have fun, an unforgettable experience, among the perfumes of the zagare (the orange blossoms), the hot Sicilian sun, and the unique sunsets of the Thyrrenian sea.
