A little further north, the picturesque area of County Durham is also easily accessible, where you can visit the very popular market town of Barnard Castle, home to the Bowes Museum. Or travel south to the spa town of Harrogate, with its Roman baths and health spa, or the historic city of York, both of which make excellent days out.
There are plenty of things to do for all the family, such as The Forbidden Corner, which is a unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises, created in a 4-acre garden in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales. Visit Big Sheep and Little Cow Farm, a family-run farm visitor centre in Bedale, which is a unique hands on farm experience for children and adults. For an exhilarating day out there’s Flamingo Land and Lightwater Valley theme parks, or if you prefer historic sights, you’ll love Mount Grace Priory set amid woodland in North Yorkshire. This unusual monastery is the best preserved Carthusian priory in Britain.
