Perfect for two, Old Mill is a cool, modern conversion of a Grade B listed 1700s water mill in the Scottish Borders and 45 minutes from Edinburgh. It’s a spacious and inviting property with an open-plan kitchen-dining-living space where a huge woodburning stove is the focal point of the room. The mezzanine bedroom has a feature bath and an en-suite rainforest shower.
Old Mill has been interior designed with modern but rustic styling. You’ll find natural fabrics, interesting furniture and decorative details. Guests will also receive complimentary spa-style products, Nespresso coffee, free wifi and unlimited logs.
Guests are free to explore the grounds around Old Mill and its neighbouring properties. You’ll find a river, woodland, a mill pond, mill lade, weir, orchard, a quarry and some friendly rare breed sheep on site. Wildlife include heron, hedgehogs, wild ducks, salmon, trout and the odd otter. From the grounds of Old Mill, guests can walk up into the Lammermuir Hills including to join the Southern Upland Way.
The original mill door marks the entrance to the property. The porch provides space to hang coats and take off muddy boots before opening the main door into the open-plan downstairs of Old Mill. You’ll find a well-equipped kitchen, painted in a rich aubergine colour, with artisan-made crockery, cutlery and glasses. There’s a dishwasher, electric fan oven, 2-ring hob, large fridge-freezer, toaster, kettle and Nespresso machine. The oak-topped dining table is set with chairs for 6 guests, though it can fit up to 12 on request.
Beyond, the living space opens up into double-height with the huge woodburner in the corner. The sofa is large and comfy, the antique Moroccan rug is cosy, and flat-screen TV. You’ll find a good selection of coffee-table books, maps, local info, DVDs and board games. The back door gives a view of the woodland and river area at the rear of the property. In the evenings, close all the shutters, draw the beautiful curtain and put the fire on.
Upstairs, the mezzanine bedroom features a king-size bed with super-comfy mattress and pure Egyptian linens. Have a soak in the deep bath – there’s a convenient stool on which to prop your book, glass of wine, cup of tea or spa-style products. Fluffy towels await by the bath and also in the en-suite shower room where guests can enjoy a rainforest-style shower.
The property is well located to explore the Scottish Borders and also Edinburgh.
Note that Old Mill is close to the A697 – while there is very little noise from the road audible inside the property, it can be heard from the grounds. If you are someone who is very sensitive to road noise, please take this into consideration.
